Five Things to Do Off the Mom Clock
Or, four fun things to do around here, and one that is ridiculous.
Here are five discoveries from my weekend off the mom clock. I tested them so you don't have to:
1. This, regarding my re-entry into yoga:
Having said that, Upper Valley Yoga does an amazing beginner’s class. Snag their 3-classes-for-$30 deal (new folks only). I left the class feeling ten feet taller. Try it and tell them The Mothership sent you. They won’t know what you mean. But try it and see how they react.
2. Good things happen when you make time for yourself. Over a year ago, my dad bought me an adorable ¾ size acoustic left-handed guitar for my birthday. I’ve barely touched it since, claiming I didn’t have the time, which was basically just me refusing to make the time. I pulled it out yesterday and, after fussing with it for 20 minutes, played one clear chord (D major, thank you very much), and literally made my own day. I can do things besides break up fights and play chauffer for small people. And so can you.
3. Stop what you’re doing and go to POST in White River Junction. The owner, Pam Post (could it be more perfect?) worked as a buyer at Gillingham’s for 17 years and now has her own store dedicated to old-school treasures. Exquisite pens, pencils, sticky notes, and fun stuff like this:
And this, for grammar nerd in your life (bought it for myself; I am that nerd):
4. Without my human girl-children, I direct all maternal energy to our guinea pig. (Exhibit A: I keep referencing her in my posts). Yesterday I cleaned her cage and reorganized her living space. I went online and researched a new cage for her altogether. Then I took a video of her eating grass in the backyard. Someone please stop me. I don’t even like her.
5. Tip Top Café is still my all-time favorite place to eat in the Upper Valley. Fresh local ingredients, exciting flavors, budget-friendly. I had a perfect grilled salmon with roasted tomatoes and herb cream sauce that I scarfed down too fast to allow for pictures. Kyle managed one photograph of his seared scallops with kale salad, parsnip puree and candied beets before I started stabbing things off his plate.
Eileen will hook you up with a great wine pairing for your dinner if you don't know what to get or want to try something new. Go see her and tell her you came from The Mothership. She also will not know what you mean.
